Fire damage cleaning is a structured, multi-stage process tailored to the type and severity of the fire. A full fire damage clean up typically includes:

• Initial assessment — we inspect every affected area and identify the soot type present (dry, wet/oily or protein-based)
• HEPA vacuuming — loose soot lifted with industrial-grade equipment before any wet cleaning
• Chemical washing — specialist soot-specific products applied ceiling-first, then walls bottom to top
• Odour neutralisation — thermal fogging and/or ozone treatment to eliminate smoke odour at molecular level
• Air scrubbing — HEPA air scrubbers run throughout to improve air quality
• Waste removal — fire-damaged materials disposed of under our Waste Carrier Licence (CBDU626436)

On completion we issue a decontamination certificate for you, your insurer and any other parties, and can advise on contents salvage and preparation for redecoration.

We strongly recommend professional fire damage cleaning. Soot is acidic and nothing like ordinary household dirt — standard cleaning products smear it deeper into surfaces, permanently staining walls and ceilings.

Safely removing soot from walls, carpets and ceilings needs:

• Industrial HEPA vacuum equipment that captures particles a domestic hoover cannot
• Specialist chemical products formulated for soot and smoke residue
• Thermal fogging and ozone generation to eliminate odour molecules rather than mask them
• Full PPE — fine soot carries toxic residues that pose real respiratory risks, especially to children and those with existing conditions

Insurance note: attempting a DIY clean before a professional assessment can complicate your claim, as insurers may consider the damage worsened or evidence compromised.

In most cases a thorough professional clean — chemical washing plus thermal fogging and/or ozone treatment — eliminates fire smoke smell rather than masking it. Two factors affect the outcome:

• Structural penetration. If smoke has embedded deep into timber, plasterboard or insulation, cleaning alone cannot remove it — those materials need stripping out and replacing.
• Phantom odours. After a major fire some people keep perceiving a smell even once the source is gone. This is a well-documented response that typically fades with time.

To get rid of fire smoke smell in the house for good, walls and ceilings must be sealed with a stain- and odour-blocking primer before redecorating. Standard emulsion painted over smoke-affected surfaces won't seal in residual odour — skipping this step is the most common cause of a returning smell. We'll advise you on this at handover.

In most cases, yes. Buildings and contents insurance typically covers fire and smoke damage remediation when the incident was accidental. Every policy is different, so always check your specific terms — but this is the norm rather than the exception.

Timescales depend on the scale and severity of the job:

• Single room, light smoke damage: typically 1–2 days including chemical treatment and odour neutralisation
• Multiple rooms / moderate damage: usually 2–4 days
• Whole property or severe fire damage: from one week upwards, particularly where structural elements or multiple floors are affected

We'll give you a clear, realistic timeframe as part of your written quote so you can plan accordingly — particularly important if temporary accommodation needs to be arranged.

This depends on the severity of the damage and which treatments are required. For minor smoke damage contained to a single room, it may be possible to remain in the rest of the property — we'll advise you honestly based on what we find.

For more significant fire damage, or any job involving thermal fogging or ozone treatment, the property must be fully vacated for the duration of those treatments and for a safe clearance period afterwards. Ozone in particular requires full evacuation, including pets. If your insurer is involved, they may cover the cost of temporary accommodation — confirm this with them directly when you make your claim.
